The findChildrenByFilter() function which is called by the web accessible path /categoriesServlet performs string interpolation and direct SQL query execution. SQL quote escaping and a keyword blacklist were implemented in a new class, SQLUtil (main/java/com/dotmarketing/common/util/SQLUtil.java), as part of the remediation of CVE-2016-8902; however, these can be overcome in the case of the q and inode parameters to the /categoriesServlet path. Overcoming these controls permits a number of blind boolean SQL injection vectors in either parameter. The /categoriesServlet web path can be accessed remotely and without authentication in a default dotCMS deployment.","published":"2017-02-17T07:59:01.000Z","lastModified":"2026-06-17T01:20:18.000Z","status":"Modified","sourceIdentifier":"cve@mitre.org","cvss":{"version":"3.0","score":9.8,"severity":"CRITICAL","vector":"CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H"},"cwe":["CWE-89"],"affected":["dotcms/dotcms"],"epss":{"score":0.06304,"percentile":0.93569,"date":"2026-10-27","history":[{"date":"2026-09-21","score":0.04516,"percentile":0.9111},{"date":"2026-09-22","score":0.06304,"percentile":0.9329}]},"kev":{"listed":false},"exploits":{"count":1,"verified":true,"firstPublished":"2017-02-16","source":"Exploit-DB (https://gitlab.com/exploit-database/exploitdb)","entries":[{"edbId":41377,"kind":"exploit","title":"dotCMS 3.6.1 - Blind Boolean SQL Injection","url":"https://www.exploit-db.com/exploits/41377","sourceUrl":"https://gitlab.com/exploit-database/exploitdb/-/blob/main/exploits/php/webapps/41377.sh","file":"exploits/php/webapps/41377.sh","published":"2017-02-16","added":"2017-02-16","updated":"2017-02-16","author":"Ben Nott","type":"webapps","platform":"php","port":80,"verified":true,"codes":["CVE-2017-5344"],"tags":null,"aliases":null,"applicationUrl":null,"screenshotUrl":null,"referenceUrl":null}]},"verdict":{"level":"urgent","text":"A public exploit is published in Exploit-DB (verified) and the impact is critical, while EPSS rates exploitation at 6.3%.
