This vulnerability occurs in the 'extensionsettings' CGI (/cgi-bin/extensionsettings) component responsible for handling some of the server's internal configurations. The CGI application doesn't properly escape the information it's passed when processing a particular multi-part form request involving scripts. The filename of the 'scriptname' variable is read in unsanitized before a call to system() is performed - allowing for remote command injection. Exploitation of this vulnerability yields shell access to the remote machine under the nobody user account. This is SonicWall Issue ID 181195.","published":"2017-02-22T05:59:00.000Z","lastModified":"2026-06-17T00:56:26.000Z","status":"Modified","sourceIdentifier":"cve@mitre.org","cvss":{"version":"3.0","score":9.8,"severity":"CRITICAL","vector":"CVSS:3.0/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H"},"cwe":["CWE-77"],"affected":["dell/sonicwall secure remote access server"],"epss":{"score":0.11554,"percentile":0.96008,"date":"2026-10-27","history":[{"date":"2026-09-21","score":0.09122,"percentile":0.95143},{"date":"2026-09-22","score":0.11554,"percentile":0.95836}]},"kev":{"listed":false},"exploits":{"count":1,"verified":false,"firstPublished":"2016-12-25","source":"Exploit-DB (https://gitlab.com/exploit-database/exploitdb)","entries":[{"edbId":41415,"kind":"exploit","title":"Sonicwall 8.1.0.2-14sv - 'extensionsettings.cgi' Remote Command Injection (Metasploit)","url":"https://www.exploit-db.com/exploits/41415","sourceUrl":"https://gitlab.com/exploit-database/exploitdb/-/blob/main/exploits/hardware/webapps/41415.rb","file":"exploits/hardware/webapps/41415.rb","published":"2016-12-25","added":"2017-02-21","updated":"2017-02-21","author":"xort","type":"webapps","platform":"hardware","port":null,"verified":false,"codes":["CVE-2016-9683"],"tags":null,"aliases":null,"applicationUrl":null,"screenshotUrl":null,"referenceUrl":null}]},"verdict":{"level":"urgent","text":"EPSS puts the probability of exploitation in the next 30 days at 11.6%, higher than 96% of all known CVEs.
